- Concerned and Confused: My Friends Smell My New Perfumes
I am equally concerned and confused by the reactions my non-fragrance-obsessed friends gave after smelling my most recent perfume purchases. Here are the official notes... versus what my friends actually smelled. Orpheon -- Diptyque This clean and powdery scent reminds me of Grandma's house, always clean and comforting. Notes include juniper berries, jasmine, powdery notes, cedar wood, and tonka bean. My friends smelled: Starch Zest soap Fresh laundry with citrus Hairspray "Professional room spray, like what the leasing office smells like" "Reminds me of Ibiza" How did we get from Grandma's house to Ibiza? Lettre de Pushkar -- Ella K At this point, I love anything with a cinnamon note and this warm, spicy vanilla and rose scent won me over. Notes include saffron, nutmeg, cinnamon, rose, orange blossom, cypriol, patchouli, vetiver, and musk. My friends smelled: Something heavy and weird "I want to lick it" Key lime Sweet, but no florals Straight chapstick I don't understand any of these comments. Strawberry Jam -- The 7 Virtues This one smells like the strawberry filling inside shortcake or pastries. Notes include pistachio, strawberry, marshmallow, and vanilla. My friends smelled: Rice Sweet Candy Maraschino cherries in a jar Rice was... unexpected. Fetiche La Rose -- Louboutin To me, this smells like slightly spicy cherry rose candy. Notes include rose, black cherry, pink pepper, and ginger. My friends smelled: Strong, heavy, and dense Warm vanilla sugar Apples Hint of Carmex The same person who called this "heavy and dense" wears Atomic Rose by Initio, which is objectively louder. Make it make sense. Ave Maria -- House of Bo This one is always a crowd pleaser. To me it smells like watery white florals. Notes include gardenia, jasmine, cashmeran, neroli, pear, rain notes, red wine, oak, and leather. My friends smelled: Peach and apricots Honeysuckle and rose "Smells like cuddling up in fresh warm laundry" "I would drink that" Soap Light and fresh Finally, some consensus. After these testing sessions, I’ve come to two conclusions: Perfume notes describe what's in the fragrance, but not necessarily what everyone will smell. Non-perfume people will smell absolutely anything except the notes listed.

- What She Remembered Before Pulling the Trigger
Hands still shaking from pulling the trigger, she walks into the coffee shop and orders the usual seven lattes and a box of muffins. "Has anyone heard from Stevenson?" she hears as she rushes into the conference room. As she lays out the steaming drinks, fragments of last night replay in her mind. The family business has always been a hindrance to her future planned career as an attorney. There's no time to study for the bar when you're cleaning up crime scenes. "He's still alive!" her uncle yelled the night before, just as she turned to see a Glock pointed at her head. In that moment, pleasant memories flashed through her mind, each tied to scent. The dusty, powdery smell of Grandma's vacuum as she cleaned the carpet while, warm aromatic bubble bath water filled the jasmine scented bathroom. (Orpheon - Diptyque) Sitting in front of the fireplace, toasting marshmallows, waiting to open Christmas gifts with her family. (By the Fireplace - Maison Margiela) Music and laughter rising from the crowd as she eats too much cotton candy and fried sweets, wandering for hours with her high school friends at the LA county fair. Shopping, rides, and freedom. (Vanilla Candy Rock Sugar - Kayali) The frequent compliments in the elevator of her first job out of college, personalized business cards in hand. "Absolutely Me", she replied when asked what perfume she's wearing. A gift from her first love, long gone but still lingering. (Absolutely Me - Escada) As the dying man turned toward the sound of yelling, she reached behind her waist, pulled the gun, and fired. Trained to hit a mark on the first shot, she never meant to use her skills in real life. Evidence and everyone who knew too much, was now gone. "I wanted blueberry, not chocolate chip!" the top-billing defense attorney snapped, tossing the bitten muffin onto the floor. Her anger settled, replaced by a newly found confidence. Careful, she thought , you don't want to end up like Stevenson.
- Scents That Set You Free
Has a fantasy ever brought you to tears? The kind that release oxytocin, endorphins, and that stress you've been clutching. Have you ever felt the ache of believing the change you crave will never come and then slip into a daydream so vivid it felt like freedom? In that world scents aren't just fragrances, they're an escape. Coffee Break (lavender, coffee, cream) for the busy mom who needs therapy in a mug. It's her Friday off, the twins are at school, and she's curled up in her cozy sweater, sipping on bliss. Guidance (woody, fruity, nutty) for the touch deprived wife who still remembers what it's like to be desired. Some swear it smells like a woman's "inner thigh". Warm amber wraps around her like an unforgettable embrace, filling the room and making her presence impossible to ignore. Gourmand Coquin (chocolate, vanilla, rum), for the woman who spent a month on a strict diet to shed the pounds gained stress eating. No more kale and discipline, it's time for chocolate and confidence. Not only is she getting that promotion, she's slipping back into her favorite jeans. El Sireno (green, marine, fresh) for the powerhouse lawyer that's earned an island escape. After a year of gathering hidden irrefutable evidence and negotiating a billion dollar class action settlement, the clear blue waters call her name. It's Friday. The kids are thriving on honor roll, in student council, and with their multiple extracurricular activities. The divorce was finalized today, her favorite chocolate treats are sitting on the counter, and the "girl's trip" has finally made it out of the group chat. Her flight to the Bahamas departs tomorrow. What tears?
- Sunshine and Moonlight in a Bottle
A scented poem inspired by the joyful radiance of Sunshine Woman by Amouage and the cold, after dark allure of Bois Dore by Van Cleef & Arpels. To me, these smell like two moments in time. Warm and inviting, Peaking through the crowd and clouds until free. Golden osmanthus hues mixing with white tobacco and blackcurrant, Making their presence known. Sweet scents fill the air, Radiating positive energy. A joyful awakening. As it sets, painting a colorful scene, It offers a calm, relaxing goodbye. Sunshine no longer gilds the trees. Heated rays give way to a cold breeze, Swirling dust kicked up from footsteps along the dark, mineral beach. The moonlight, a spotlight, shines on the crowd dancing the night away. Syrupy cocktails, sugared desserts, and skin kissed with sweat Overtake your senses. No one wants this vacation to end. Sunshine Notes: Top notes are Almond, Black Currant and Davana. Middle notes are Osmanthus, Vanilla, Magnolia and Jasmine. Base notes are White Tobacco, Papyrus, Patchouli and Cade oil. Bois Dore Notes: Top notes are Black Pepper and Mineral notes. Middle notes are Vanilla, Almond, Tobacco and Cedar. Base notes are Tonka Bean, Teak Wood and Musk.
- My Comfort Blanket in a Perfume Bottle
A scent that knows how to hold you It has been a long, stressful work week. She's met every deadline, launched a new project, and de-escalated a tense executive meeting. Walking through the front door, she kicks off her heels and heads straight for the shower. It's Friday, and she has two hours before her cozy at-home date night with her husband. On the bathroom mirror there's a sticky note: "Change of Plans - Be Ready to Leave at 7pm". Three unanswered calls later, she jumps in the shower, annoyed by the lack of explanation. While cleansing, exfoliating, and lathering up, she mentally assembles an outfit despite her mood. Twenty minutes have passed. Still no word. Feeling rushed by the time change, annoyed by no missed calls or texts, and frustrated by the secrecy, she storms into the bedroom, heart racing, and sees him. Her husband stands there with a bouquet of orange tulips, a box of praline chocolates, and two first-class flight tickets to Santorini, Greece. He smiles and says, "We've got a private movie night in the sky". Althair by Parfums de Marly is the scent of the night. A blend of vanilla, praline, cinnamon, and orange blossom, that's familiar and safe, but confident. It's my comfort blanket in a bottle. What's yours?
- Notes of Green: A Mermaid Dream
A breath of fresh air smells green. Your senses welcome garden notes that cool the body on a hot sunny day. Mint, snapped leaves, picked flowers, and even cannabis waft through the air, relaxing the shoulders and softening the expressions of those passing by. In reverie, you hear the waterfall below while sitting at the top of the cliff, watching a group of young divers ascend from the light blue depths, one holding what looks like a six foot trident. How deep is this water and are mermaids real? As soon as the thought forms, something green, purple, coral, and gold shimmers beneath the surface, swirling around and surrounding them. As these colors shoot from the base of the waterfall, the cascading water begins to slow and calm, allowing a faint humming to pierce through. Eyes narrowing in search of the voice, you spot a woman's figure perched on a rock straight ahead. She's holding something, but you're distracted by the panicked screams below and look down. The divers are being yanked under, one by one. Frozen in terror, your eyes lift and lock with the humming redhead. Steam rises from the water, clouding your vision, then something or someone pushes you from the edge. Falling down the waterfall, the humming grows louder until you hit the water face first with a splash. "I'm so sorry!" the waitress says, quickly removing broken glass and spilled cocktails from your lap. "I'll get the manager", she adds walking away, suddenly calm and... humming? "Are you okay?" your friends ask, blotting the sweet scented liquid with napkins. "That'll cool you down", the birthday girl jokes. Some of my favorite green, refreshing fragrances: Florabotanica by Balenciaga - green, rose, cannabis, refreshing J'adore Parfum d'Eau by Dior - fresh and green white florals Poets of Berlin by Vilhelm - blueberry, bamboo, sweet, woody El Sireno by House of Bo - mossy, aquatic floral
- The Cinnamon Conspiracy
Can you really taste that sprinkle of cinnamon on your latte, or does the aroma alone enhance the experience? Eyes wide with excitement, the addictive scent draws you in, warmth spreading from your lips and flowing through your body like a wave. The energy shifts in the room as you radiate happiness. Fear no longer exists as you walk out the door and slide into the backseat of a black SUV. "Thank you for the lemon cake. It smells and tastes divine!" you yell down the hall to the former Chief of Staff's wife, while simultaneously memorizing the safe combination scribbled on the piece of paper just handed to you. Later, after charming your way into an Invite Only rooftop party, you pass out shots of cognac to your new friends, swaying to the music. Muscular arms wrap around your waist, pulling you into a kiss. "You clean up nice", he teases. But suddenly you pause, remembering the Amex card you swiped from a man stepping out of his Lambo. The same card that paid for the dark satin dress hugging your frame. "I'm just an elementary school teacher... how did I get here?" you wonder. The handsome man pulls you in for another kiss, his honey lavender scent clouding your thoughts. Naxos? Then, behind the tall DJ booth, shielded from view, a sniper riffle is tossed in your hands. Instinct kicks in as you perfectly aim, firing a single shot from the rooftop into the 20th floor hotel suite across the street. The music drowns out the sound of the bullet piercing through the glass and into the target's skull. "We have 15 minutes before they check on him; let's get to that safe", he whispers. The sun rises, spilling light through the window; the sheets lightly smell of incense and warm spice from last night's Cavort. You sit upright in a panic. Did I just recover stolen classified intel for a top secret agency last night... or was it just a dream? Trying to recall yesterday's events, your memory quickly fades as you search for the Notes App to type out what you remember. Emails, social media notifications, and calendar reminders flood in; the thought slips away. As you finally rise and walk to the next room, you have a craving for a cinnamon dusted latte. The fragrances featured in this Scented Story, and those that inspired it, each conceal notes of cinnamon. Do you find yourself lost in the addictive spice? Khamrah Qahwa - A rich blend of cinnamon, coffee, vanilla, and amber Lira - Decadent lemon cake dusted with cinnamon. Invite Only - A mix of amber, cherry, cinnamon. Angles Share - A warm scent of cognac, oak, cinnamon, and praline. Oud Satin Mood Extrait - A luxurious rose, cinnamon, vanilla, and oud. Naxos - Hypnotizing honey, lavender, and cinnamon. Cavort - Sensual cinnamon, florals, incense, and sandalwood.
- Fourth Wing Perfume Picks
Fourth Wing follows Violet Sorrengail, who is forced into a deadly dragon-riding academy where survival is a constant battle. She faces ruthless competition, hidden truths, and a growing attraction to the mysterious and dangerous Xaden Riorson. While the War College may not seem like the ideal setting for perfume talk, I thought it would be fun to imagine what scents these complex characters would wear. Here is how I would scent the main characters. Violet Sorrengail Physically fragile, but intelligent and slowly discovering her strength and powers. Perfume: Atomic Rose by Initio Parfums. Just like her, Atomic Rose takes the delicate rose note and transforms it into something explosive. The perfume is a reflection of her journey as she grows into her powers and uncovers her true potential. Xaden Riorson Powerful, intense, and son of a rebel. Perfume: Oud Wood by Tom Ford. Xaden's presence is both magnetic and intimidating. Oud Wood mirrors his dark mysterious edge with the blend of oud and spices. It gives complexity that demands attention while the vanilla note in the dry down gives the fragrance warmth. Perfect for someone not easily understood, but impossible to ignore. Dain Aetos Violet's childhood best friend and over protective companion. Perfume: Bleu de Chanel by Chanel. A predictable and safe option for someone that always follows the rules. Undeniably masculine, but not bold enough for a true war leader. A classic scent better suited for a protector. Rhiannon Matthias Violet's first true friend. Supportive, talented, and grounded. Perfume: Ani by Nishane. Rhiannon encourages Violet's growth without underestimating her. Ani is the perfect scent for her; a comforting sweet vanilla fragrance with a fierce spicy edge. It's not just sweet, but layered with depth for a confident personality. On to book number 2. Have you read Fourth Wing? Let me know what perfumes you think match their personalities.

- The Perfect Layer: Opposites Attract
The room falls silent, anticipation building as the click clack of her red bottom heels echo down the hall. Her speech starts the second she enters and her commanding voice cuts through the stillness. As she claims her place at the head of the conference room, a bold trail of tuberose and amber announce her presence as much as her words do. Walking towards the exit, she ends her speech with unwavering confidence: "We do not give up. We handle it". She is Rouge Malachite ; a force to be reckoned with. Moments later, the team scatters, focused on the task at hand. She retreats to her corner office, opening the door to find him waiting. He stands with a knowing smirk and admiration in his eyes. He rises to embrace her and she melts in his arms. The sweet, spicy, woody, and lavender of his scent wraps around her, relaxing and grounding her. He is Rehab ; her equal, her balance, her perfect complement. One of my favorite perfume layering combinations is Rouge Malachite by Armani Prive and Rehab by Initio Parfums. These two powerhouses create an unforgettable synergy: floral and spicy, sweet and woody. It’s bold yet balanced, confident yet comforting. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
